Psychotherapy for Life Transitions & Identity in NYC

Life brings with it a wide range of experiences and emotions - grief and loss, rejection, isolation, guilt, shame, shifting relationships, and transitions that can leave us feeling uneasy and stuck.

Therapy is not about having all the answers, but about building the internal capacity to sit with complexity, to understand your story, and to engage life more meaningfully.

About Andy

I’m Andy Chan, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist in New York City. My approach is grounded in the belief that therapy isn't just about finding answers, but about building the internal capacity to sit with life’s most complex moments.

Alongside my private practice, my clinical perspective is shaped by my experience supporting individuals through complex medical crises and sudden life transitions. I specialize in the 'invisible' recovery—the emotional and identity shifts that happen when your health or circumstances change overnight.

My Training & Credentials

I hold a Master’s degree in Social Work from the CUNY Silberman School of Social Work. My practice is technically informed by:

  • Somatic Experiencing (Focusing on the body's response to stress)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

I am certified with the Beck Institute and an active member of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science.

I typically work with individuals navigating depression, anxiety, or the identity crisis that follows illness or professional shift. Whether we are addressing grief or chronic mental habits that hinder your progress, our work is directed toward uncovering what’s holding you back. Clients often describe me as steady, direct, and attuned. I care deeply about creating a space where you can slow down and explore what’s true for you.

Outside of the Office

When I am not working with clients, I am usually looking for my next adventure. I have a deep love for being in nature and exploring different cultures. Whether I am hiking through the landscapes of Iceland, Colorado, or Banff, or enjoying the local scene in Europe, I find that traveling helps me keep a fresh perspective on the world.

At home, I am just as passionate about rescue animals and spending time with my own rescue dog. I really enjoy trying out new cuisines and discovering all the hidden gems that New York City has to offer. I believe that having a full, curious life outside of work makes me a more attuned and present therapist for you.

Your Questions, Answered

  • My clinical background includes extensive experience in high-intensity medical settings, where I supported individuals and families navigating the immediate 'aftermath' of life-altering health events, such as strokes or sudden diagnoses.

In my private practice, I focus on what I call the 'invisible recovery.' While the medical system is designed to stabilize your physical health, I provide a space to process the profound identity shifts, grief, and 'new normal' that follow. We work together to bridge the gap between your physical recovery and your emotional well-being.

  • I specialize in the 'aftermath' of change. Most therapy addresses stress, but I focus on the complex reality of life after a major shift—be it a professional transition or a sudden medical diagnosis. My experience in a high-acuity hospital setting allows me to sit comfortably with the complexity of life-altering news and physical quality-of-life changes. I am also constantly checking in and re-evaluating our progress to ensure the work remains as dynamic as the life you are rebuilding.

  • I offer psychotherapy services for adults ages 18 and up. We begin sessions on a weekly basis and gradually taper as treatment progresses.

  • I primarily see my clients via telehealth with limited in-person availability.

  • Fees for a 45 - 60 minute psychotherapy session range from $125 to 150. Sliding scale costs are available on a limited basis.

I work with a handful of insurance providers, including Aetna, Cigna, among others.

For out of network costs, I do provide super bills for reimbursement. For most insurance carriers, clients can expect to recuperate 50-75% of their costs.

  • Think of the first session as a "get to know you" meeting. It’s a bit more structured than a regular therapy hour. We’ll spend time discussing what brought you in, your history, and what you’re hoping to change. It’s less about deep diving into trauma on day one and more about building a map of where we need to go.

Let’s find a time to talk. I’d love to hear more about what you’re going through and what you’re hoping to find in a therapist. And if it turns out I’m not the right fit, I’ll help you find someone who is.
